Don’t Let Perfection Slow You Down

“Striving for excellence motivates you. Striving for perfection demoralizes you. Do your best, not other people’s best.”

Tony Cruz

When I saw my friend Tony post this a long while back it resonated with me. So I saved it. Because I think we all struggle with this sometimes.

I know some of us – more than others – especially struggle with perfection and trying to make everyone happy. I’ve especially found that challenge present in ministry. We have a million people to please, and only so many hours in a day to do what they all expect we should.

That’s when it’s important that we realize this distinction. We should strive to do high caliber work. It’ll fire us up for the possibility of seeing our dreams come true and being able to be proud of them when they do.

We should try to do our jobs, whatever they may be, with a spirit of excellence. But we can’t be perfect. It’s just not possible. There was only One Guy ever who was able to do it, and unless you’re Jesus, it ain’t you!

So do your work today as if you were doing it directly for the Lord (Colossians 3:23-24). Live to please Him and honor Him with the gifts He’s given you. Allow other people’s opinions to be icing on the cake rather than the batter used to bake it! Go and do your best and let God handle the results.
